Lars Flatø Nessa
2022 Valor Spear Laureate
Volunteer alpine rescue leader
The Story
From 2014 to 2022, Lars Flatø Nessa led the Rogaland Alpine Rescue Group.
Steinar Kragset, a rescue climber in the group, shares: "Lars has led the Rogaland Alpine Rescue Group in a generous and reassuring manner. He has dedicated significant voluntary effort both as a rescue climber and as a leader, and he is a role model for the rest of the group."
Not everyone is familiar with Norway's Alpine Rescue Groups. These are the volunteers called upon by the police and rescue services when weather conditions and mountainous terrain make it impossible for helicopters to operate. The groups consist of some of Norway's most skilled and experienced climbers. They save people in acute danger and ensure that those who have lost their lives are brought down to their final resting place. Rescue climbers, who are on voluntary standby 24 hours a day, deserve the highest honor.
