Lars Flatø Nessa
2022 Valor Spear Laureate
Alpine rescue volunteer

For long-term and selfless efforts in voluntary rescue service for people in dire need.
The Story
From 2014 to 2022, Lars Flatø Nessa led the Rogaland Alpine Rescue Group.
Steinar Kragset, a rescue climber within the group, shares: "Lars has led the Alpine Rescue Group in a generous and reassuring manner. His significant voluntary contributions, both as a rescue climber and leader, have made him a role model for the entire team."
Norway's Alpine Rescue Groups may not be widely known, but they play a crucial role in search and rescue efforts. These volunteers are called upon by the police and rescue services when weather conditions and mountainous terrain prevent helicopter operations. Comprising some of Norway's most skilled and experienced climbers, these volunteer groups work to rescue those in immediate danger and bring the deceased to their final resting place. Rescue climbers, who are on standby 24/7, deserve the utmost respect and recognition.
